There is a lot of versatility in where respiratory therapist jobs take place. You can work in a nursing home, or you could be visiting people in their homes, although you will probably be working in a hospital most of the time. For those doing this job, there are a lot of people with breathing problems to whom you are very important.

You will need a lot of skill and knowledge to do this job, also. You will probably find that you will be working a twelve-hour day when working in a hospital. This is, of course, a lot of hard work but you will also find it be very rewarding. You will need to be aware of the treatment of your patient and what they are going through and any medication that they are taking.

You will definitely need to know of any changes that happen at any point of the day. For those working in a hospital, the ventilators will need to be checked to make sure that they are working. You should do this every morning, after the night staff have told you whether there is an issue them.

You should also be conferring with the nurses and the physicians that will be treating your patient. Your schedule will be incredibly busy, and the wards will often be very hectic, which adds even more pressure. In neonatal wards, this will be particularly true, especially since babies are especially vulnerable.

The procedures, of course, need to be followed, thoroughly, especially since you this a very important aspect of keeping your patients alive. You will find that this is a very demanding career, particularly if you work with babies and children. For instance, you may wake a child when tending to another.

There will be interruptions and emergencies and you will need to know how to deal with these. There will, usually, be a limit of the patients that you will need to say, but if there is a shortage of therapists, this limit will be increased. It is quite common for there to be a shortage, here, so you will need to be prepared for this increase in pressure.

The training, as well as the job, is also very demanding. Physiology, physics, mathematics and pharmacology are some of the subjects that you will need to study during this course, so you should probably do some research and prepare for this, first. There is also yet more work in the core courses that you will need to do, so you should definitely keep this in mind.

If you are interested, then you will find the curriculum to be demanding and stimulating at once. A licence is also required, and to get this, you will need to take an exam. Your job, should the exam be passed, will be stressful, yet very rewarding. You might find the salary varies, although it is generally quite a well-paid job. You will need some intense skill to do this job and it may be incredibly off-putting. You probably will not, though, find the job to be satisfactory to you if you are put off by the training, however.
